cobra
I know most people here are OK with using credit/debit cards and contactless Google/Apple Pay But I bet most of you know someone that will not use this and are Cash only (The are a lot of reasons for this phenomenon) The is currently a Petition to protect Cash as legal tender until 2050 I'd like to ask if the people here can sign the Petition please. (You don't have to tick the box at the bottom just click on "add signature" when you full it in) https://www.gbnews.com/cash

Rother
They might squeeze the use of cash but they will not stop it. (or wilfully stop it) So many small businesses use mainly cash for obvious reasons. Cash talks. For instance: I recently had my house re-roofed (new tiles, latts and underlay + guttering and facias) I had several quotes of about the same price. One offered 2 grand off for cash. (so he got the job) Ironically, when I withdrew the cash - the bank wanted to know what it was for. I mean they insisted I had to tell them. I was taken to a private booth with the manager and he had a form to fill out. 'A gift' was not acceptable unless I named who for. We settled on 'a new car' that has not been decided which one yet. The manager said several times 'it's to stop money laundering and nefarious deals. He also had to report it to the inland revenue.
cobra
I have known from 2010 any transaction or withdrawal over £500 was flagged (don't know if it's still £500 today) Rother what I usually say is travel and holiday money with I don't know how good the mobile signal is going to be and I don't know if the cash machines in the area are the free to use or the pay to use ones and last time the card readers were down at one of the establishments I used and I'd like to not go through all that again thinks. This has worked about half a dozen times over the years but I have never had to fill a form in before is this new.
Rother
He filled in the form and asked the questions. It looked like an internal form. He could see I was getting a bit cross with all the palaver to withdraw my OWN money. It was a good few thousand I was withdrawing so I expected a bit of checking but it went on three-quarters of an hour before I left with the thick brown envelope. Here's another similar story; I was paid cash by a customer. £450.00 but when I looked it was 9 Scottish £50 notes. Who the hell is going to take them in payment - not even the petrol garage would. I took them to my bank to change for English ones. They don't just change them anymore. You have to deposit them and then they will withdraw them back out from your account. They want a paper trail for everything.
cobra
It's good to know about that internal form and the extra three-quarters of an hour to get few thousand out. One of the tips if you have the time for it is to stagger the withdraw over 4 or 5 day at £400-£500 a day if say you needed £2G Don't know if this still works on ATMs but I used to do one withdraw at 11:55pm and a 2nd at 12:05am
derren
One of my clients was needing money to buy a horse box from his private account. He is a private person and when they asked what for he said it was none of their business. Was around 8k. There was a mexican standoff between them as they wanted a reason and he would not give it. So finally he got his cash and they said next time he needs to give a reason. So next time he needed cash he put 'al-queda training camp 2'. They were not impressed 🙂
